Non-Habitual Resident status in Portugal

The NHR is a special tax income regime created by Portugal.

Benefits include:
• 20% flat tax rate if you are employed or self-employed and your income comes from a “high value-added activity” (e.g., scientific, artistic or technical character) in Portugal.
• Possible tax exemption on foreign employment income, dividends, interest, capital gains, rental income, self-employment, and professional income if certain conditions are met.
• 10% flat tax rate on foreign pensions.
Other benefits also include tax benefits on gifts or inheritance you receive.

You can request if you are over 18 and you:
• Have tax residency in Portugal; and
• Have not had tax residency in Portugal in any of the preceding five years of your NHR application.

If for example within a tax year you spend over 183 days (continuously or not) in Portugal.

You must apply for the NHR by 31 March of the following year that you become a resident in Portugal.
For example, if you become a resident in Portugal in September 2022, you have until 31 March 2023 to request your NHR.

For a 10-year period from the year, you are registered as a tax resident in Portugal.
Resident Visas

It is a visa that allows you to enter and stay in Portugal for four months. Within this period, you can apply for permanent residence in Portugal.

Some of the visas include Digital Nomad Visa (D8 Visa), Entrepreneurship Visa (D2 Visa), Passive Income Visa (D7 Visa).

There are general and specific requirements (specific requirements vary on the type of visa).
Under the Digital Nomad Visa, you will require to show that your work remotely for an employer/clients outside of Portugal.
For the Entrepreneurship Visa, you will require to create a business in Portugal.
As for the Passive Income Visa, you will require to demonstrate you receive passive income (e.g., income from property you own or investment funds).

Temporary Stay Visas

A temporary stay visa in Portugal is designed to enable entry and residence in the country for a duration of less than one year.

Portugal's visa options include the Digital Nomad Visa for remote work (D8), an Accompanying Visa for family, a Trade Services Visa for WTO nationals, and the Amateur Sports Visa.

To secure a Portuguese visa, both general and specific prerequisites must be met (specific criteria differ by visa type).
These include having no prior entry bans, no Schengen Information System or SEF Integrated Information System entry prohibitions, financial means per government regulations, a valid travel document, travel insurance, and, for unaccompanied minors, parental authorization.
Furthermore, a valid return ticket is mandatory for temporary stay, job search, and short-stay visas.
